The mausoleum of the complex was built back in the time of Tamerlane. According to legend, initially it was planned to be erected in honor of the Muslim figure Ahmed Yassawi, but the construction faced obstacles, and the wall of the building was constantly collapsing. Local residents tell that Yassawi himself appeared to Tamerlane in a dream and indicated that the monument should be erected in honor of his devoted follower Ay Khoja. Following the instructions, the mausoleum was successfully completed, and in the 14th century, a madrasa and a mosque were added to it, enriching the complex with its cultural treasures.
