Boris Yeltsin, the first President of the Russian Federation, visited Kyrgyzstan in 2002 at the invitation of President Askar Akaev. As a sign of honor and respect, it was decided to conquer one of the peaks of the Terskey Alatoo mountain range and name it after Boris Yeltsin.

A team of professional climbers from Kyrgyzstan and Russia participated in the ascent. Their goal was the Central peak of the mountain range, which stands at 5168 meters. The climb was documented in early October 2002 – the climbers conquered the peak and left a commemorative flag and a decree from the governor about renaming the peak. The climbers took the southern route, as the other routes were at risk of avalanches. Mount Yeltsin is located near the city of Karakol and is considered to have a medium level of difficulty for climbing. It’s a fairly interesting route that requires experience and preparation.
