The Peak of Victory is located on the Kokshaal Ridge, near the border with China. It is the highest point of the Tian Shan mountain range and the second-highest within the territory of the former USSR, after Peak Communism. The mountain got its name in honor of the victory in the Second World War.
The southeastern slopes of the mountain are within China’s territory – the border passes through the summit and along the east-west ridges. Climbing the peak is complicated by severe weather conditions and is accessible to mountaineers with good preparation. Even in summer, the temperature can drop to about 30 degrees below zero Celsius, and the wind can blow at speeds of around 150 kilometers per hour. Once known as the ‘most deadly’ mountain in the Soviet Union, the number of climbers who died on it was higher than on Everest. On average, 12 people perish on its slopes over 10 years, remaining forever in the embrace of the mountain.
