The Tanbaly Historical Complex is located 180 km away from Almaty. In 2004, it was granted UNESCO World Heritage status. It’s an open-air museum featuring ancient sacred sites, burial grounds, and over 5,000 petroglyphs. Rituals and sacred ceremonies were conducted here in ancient times, with prayers offered to spirits and gods.
Archaeologists believe the earliest petroglyphs date back to the Bronze Age, with more recent ones from the 6th to 8th centuries CE. Of particular interest are the kagans, depicted as sun-headed creatures, considered some of the earliest representations of deities.
The site also contains numerous burial mounds spanning different epochs, from the Bronze and Iron Ages to modern times.
Our company can arrange jeep tours to the most fascinating locations in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.
