Nikolai Mikhailovich Przhevalsky is the most renowned geographer of Central and Eastern Asia. He meticulously studied the characteristics of peoples, mountain landscapes, flora, and fauna, creating maps and catalogs. In his honor, in 1888, the city of Karakol was renamed Przhevalsk, and a memorial museum was opened. The museum has been operating since 1957, featuring exhibits such as documents, samples of flora and fauna, photographs, personal belongings, and diaries.

The traveler managed to conduct four expeditions, during which unique specimens were collected, and maps were compiled. He was the first European to visit Lake Qinghai on the Tibetan Plateau. Additionally, animals such as Przhevalsky’s gazelle and horse were named in his honor, along with several species of plants and reptiles. The museum is located near the traveler’s grave.
