Bayan-Zhurek Petroglyphs are rock inscriptions located in the mountains of the same name in the Junggar Alatau range. Research on this site began in 1993. Single and group images have been discovered, depicting the lifestyle of the people of that time and allowing the reconstruction of the chronology of certain events. They belong to the Eneolithic era.
The petroglyphs are divided into 2 complexes – Bayan-Zhurek and Tasbassky. Both are part of the archaeological complex of the Upper-Bienn Valley. The Bayan-Zhurek complex consists of approximately 2500 drawings in six groups spread over the first two kilometers of the ridge at altitudes ranging from 1600 to 1800 meters.
The Tasbassky complex was discovered in 1999-2001 by an expedition from the Institute of Archaeology and the Geoarchaeology Laboratory of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It includes petroglyphs, pits, and proto-sculptures.
