One of the most famous and magnificent madrasas in Khiva is the Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasa. The madrasa has an entrance from the street that opens into an inner courtyard, surrounded by a massive wall on the outside and lined with low one-story cells (hujras) inside. In the center of the inner courtyard rises the main two-story building, with a majestic portal on the central facade of the madrasa. Towers, known as guldasta, rise high at the corners of the madrasa, topped with graceful domes adorned with green mosaic. The facade of the madrasa is predominantly adorned with white and blue majolica, which is also elegantly used to decorate the tympanums (triangular or semi-circular pediments) and columns. Exquisite brick patterns are masterfully laid over the main entrance, arches, and vaults of the loggias.
