The Mausoleum of Abubakr Kaffal ash-Shashi is one of the outstanding works of culture and architecture in Tashkent, forming part of the historical and architectural ensemble of Hazrat Imam. This complex is located in the old district of the city and serves as a remarkable example of its rich heritage.
The name “Hazrat Imam” (“Holy Imam”) was given to the square and architectural ensemble in honor of the prominent Imam, Quranic scholar, and preacher Abubakr Kaffal ash-Shashi. This great scholar and theologian was born in Tashkent in the distant year of 903 into a family of craftsmen who specialized in making intricate locks. He was named after the companion of the Prophet Muhammad and the first caliph – Abu Bakr.
Thanks to his outstanding merits and fame, he remained in the memory of people primarily as a “Tashkent citizen,” which served as the basis for the nickname “Kaffal ash-Shashi” – “locksmith from Tashkent.” Not without an amazing legend, according to which he received the nickname “Kaffal” or “Locksmith” for making an exquisite lock, the key to which weighed over a kilogram.
