Lake Tengiz is a unique non-flowing lake located in northern Kazakhstan, in the Tengiz-Korgalzhyn depression, and it is the largest lake in this depression. Lake Tengiz is situated on the border of the Akmola and Karaganda regions and holds a special place in Kazakhstan’s rich natural heritage. It is part of the Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 under the name “Saryarka – Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan.”

The salinity of Lake Tengiz is its distinctive feature. The lake water contains mirabilite, making it bitter and salty. This characteristic gives the lake its unique character and makes it an important subject for research and nature conservation efforts.
