Kunya-Ark, known as the “fortress within a fortress,” is a citadel that was built by the Khans of Khiva. Its construction began in the period from 1686 to 1688. By the late 18th century, Kunya-Ark essentially became a “city within a city” and was separated from Itchan Kala by a high stone wall.
Originally, the fortress included the Khan’s chancelleries, reception halls, harem, summer and winter mosques, a mint, as well as various service facilities including stables, warehouses, and workshops. In the early 19th century, the Kunya-Ark complex was restored, and its current appearance has been preserved since then.
