The Ark Citadel is an ancient symbol of state power and one of the most impressive landmarks in Bukhara, attracting the attention of tourist companies from Bishkek for organizing unique jeep tours. It is believed to have existed for over one and a half thousand years.
The Ark has always been a reliable stronghold for the rulers of Bukhara and the main residence of emirs over the centuries. It served as the seat of supreme command of the country and attracted great scholars, poets, and philosophers such as Rudaki, Ferdowsi, Avicenna, Al-Farabi, and Omar Khayyam.
The history of the fortress is inseparably linked to Bukhara’s wars and uprisings. During the conquest of Bukhara by Genghis Khan, the Ark was taken by assault, and the city was plundered. But regardless of historical upheavals, the Ark continues to inspire with its grandeur and historical value.
Today, the Ark is a magnificent earthen structure, approaching an irregular rectangle, with a total length of walls of about 789.60 meters and an area of 3.96 hectares. The height of the fortress from the level of Registan Square ranges from 16 to 20 meters. The ceremonial entrance is adorned with two columnar towers, and inside, the Ulughbek and Jomi mosques are preserved, which are associated with interesting legends.
Visiting the Ark is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the historical heritage of Bukhara, and the DWC tourist company from Bishkek will be happy to help you organize unforgettable jeep tours and travels to these amazing places.
