Buddhist monastery Ajina-Tepa, dating back to the 7th-8th centuries, is nestled in the picturesque Vakhsh Valley of Tajikistan, just 12 kilometers from the city of Kurgan-Tyube. It was discovered by the scientist Boris Litvinsky in 1960. Thanks to Litvinsky’s efforts, it became possible to gain a deeper understanding of the history of the Vakhsh Valley as part of the ancient country known as Bactria, and later as Tokharistan.
Excavations at Ajina-Tepa shed new light on the history of this part of Asia. They allowed for a reevaluation of the region’s past and revealed that Buddhism emerged here at the turn of the new era. This marked the beginning of a long history of interaction between Buddhism and the Asian world, including China. DWC tour company invites you to embark on this exciting journey into the past and explore the remarkable heritage of the Buddhist monastery Ajina-Tepa.
