The Karatal-Japyryk Reserve is a natural oasis of wildlife in the Naryn region. The flora and fauna of these places are very unique. Lake Son-Kul is located 16 km from the reserve.

The reserve was established in 1994 with the aim of preserving pristine nature, rare and endangered plants and animals. The protected area includes Karatal, Achatash, and the adjacent areas of Son-Kul and Chatyr-Kul lakes. The total area of the reserve is 21,016 hectares.

The climate here is continental, with winter frosts alternating with summer heat and little precipitation. The nature of the reserve is characterized by picturesque and diverse landscapes. At present, it is home to 7 species of birds that have not been exterminated by uncontrolled hunting.
