Kara-tepe is a historical Buddhist monastery that emerged between the 1st and 4th centuries AD, located on three hills in the northwest part of Old Termez. Kara-tepe is a complex of temples and monasteries built in the early 2nd century AD.

The architecture of Kara-tepe surprises with its combination of caves carved into sandstone and external structures built of adobe and unburned brick. The interiors of the temples are adorned with exquisite thematic paintings, plaster ornaments, and sculptures made of clay and loess. Marble-like limestone and finely carved gypsum were widely used in the architectural design of the temples.
